How to Reface Kitchen Cabinets Yourself

Tired of your outdated kitchen cabinets? Refacing them is a cost-effective way to revamp your kitchen without replacing the entire cabinetry. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you reface your kitchen cabinets like a pro:

Materials and Tools You'll Need:

  • Cabinet refacing panels
  • Edge banding
  • Veneer adhesive
  • Contact cement
  • Clamps
  • Nail gun
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Jigsaw
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Prepare the Cabinets

Thoroughly clean the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Remove all hardware and any existing veneer or paint. Sand the surfaces lightly to create a smooth base for the new panels.

Step 2: Cut the Refacing Panels

Measure the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Cut the refacing panels to size using a jigsaw. Ensure the panels extend slightly beyond the edges of the cabinets.

Step 3: Apply Veneer Adhesive

Spread a thin layer of veneer adhesive onto the back of the refacing panels. Carefully align the panels with the cabinets and press them into place. Use clamps to secure the panels.

Step 4: Apply Edge Banding

Cut strips of edge banding to fit the exposed edges of the refacing panels. Apply contact cement to the edges and firmly press the edge banding into place. Trim any excess.

Step 5: Secure the Panels

Use a nail gun to secure the refacing panels to the cabinets. Drive nails every 6-8 inches along the edges. Countersink the nails slightly below the surface.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Sand any rough edges or imperfections smoothly. Touch up any nicks or scratches with paint or stain that matches the new finish. Reinstall the hardware to complete the updated look.

Tips:

  • Choose cabinet refacing panels that complement your existing kitchen style.
  • Practice on a spare piece of material before refacing your actual cabinets.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a dust mask.
  • Allow ample drying time for the adhesive and contact cement.
  • Don't overtighten the clamps, as this can damage the panels.
By following these steps, you can successfully reface your kitchen cabinets and transform your kitchen's appearance in no time.
