How to Add Lights Under Kitchen Cabinets
Undercabinet lighting can dramatically improve kitchen functionality and aesthetics. Not only does it provide additional illumination for tasks like chopping, cooking, and cleaning, but it can also create a warm and inviting ambiance. Adding undercabinet lights is a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a few hours with basic tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need:
- Undercabinet light fixtures
- Electrical wire
- Wire strippers
- Electrical tape
- Drill
- Screws
Step 1: Plan the Layout
Before you begin, determine the number and placement of the light fixtures. Typically, one light fixture is needed for every 12-15 inches of cabinet space. Mark the locations of the fixtures on the cabinets.
Step 2: Install the Mounting Brackets
Most undercabinet light fixtures come with mounting brackets. Align the brackets with the marks you made and secure them to the cabinets using screws. Ensure the brackets are level and securely fastened.
Step 3: Run the Electrical Wire
Cut the electrical wire to the desired length, ensuring there is enough slack for the fixtures to be connected and moved. Strip the ends of the wire about 1/2 inch using wire strippers.
Step 4: Wire the Fixtures
Connect the electrical wire to the terminals on the light fixtures. Match the black wire to the black terminal, the white wire to the white terminal, and the green wire (if present) to the ground terminal. Secure the connections with electrical tape.
Step 5: Install the Fixtures
Slide the light fixtures into the mounting brackets and secure them with screws or clips. Make sure the fixtures are angled slightly downwards to direct the light onto the work surface.
Step 6: Connect the Wires
Connect the wires from the light fixtures to the wires from the power source. Use wire connectors or a junction box to create secure and insulated connections.
Step 7: Power On and Test
Turn on the power and test the lights. Adjust the angle of the fixtures as needed to optimize illumination.
Additional Tips:
- Use dimmable undercabinet lights for added versatility.
- Consider using LED lights for energy efficiency and longevity.
- Add a switch or dimmer to control the lights.
- For a more finished look, install light diffusers to soften the glare.
- If the undercabinet space is limited, consider using puck lights or LED strips.
