How to Build Shaker Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Shaker kitchen cabinet doors are a popular choice for their simple, clean lines and timeless appeal. They are relatively easy to build, making them a good project for beginner woodworkers.

To build Shaker cabinet doors, you will need the following materials:

  • 1x12 pine boards
  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Wood glue
  • 1-1/4-inch brad nails
  • 1-1/2-inch wood screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain

Once you have gathered your materials, you can follow these steps to build your Shaker cabinet doors:

  1. Cut the 1x12 pine boards to the desired length and width of your cabinet doors. The length of the boards will be the height of the doors, and the width will be the width of the doors. For example, if you want to build a cabinet door that is 30 inches high and 18 inches wide, you would cut the 1x12 pine boards to 30 inches long and 18 inches wide.
  2. Rip the 1/4-inch plywood to the same width as the 1x12 pine boards. The length of the plywood will be the length of the cabinet doors minus 1 inch. For example, if you want to build a cabinet door that is 30 inches high and 18 inches wide, you would rip the 1/4-inch plywood to 17 inches wide and 29 inches long.
  3. Apply wood glue to the edges of the 1x12 pine boards. Then, place the plywood on top of the pine boards and align the edges. Use 1-1/4-inch brad nails to secure the plywood to the pine boards. Space the nails about 6 inches apart.
  4. Once the plywood is attached, you can add the stiles and rails to the cabinet doors. The stiles are the vertical pieces of wood that run along the sides of the doors, and the rails are the horizontal pieces of wood that run across the top and bottom of the doors. To make the stiles, cut two pieces of 1x12 pine to the same height as the cabinet doors. To make the rails, cut two pieces of 1x12 pine to the same width as the cabinet doors.
  5. Apply wood glue to the edges of the stiles and rails. Then, place the stiles and rails on the cabinet doors and align the edges. Use 1-1/2-inch wood screws to secure the stiles and rails to the cabinet doors. Space the screws about 6 inches apart.
  6. Once the stiles and rails are attached, you can sand the cabinet doors to smooth any rough edges. Then, you can paint or stain the cabinet doors to match your kitchen décor.

Building Shaker kitchen cabinet doors is a relatively easy project, and it can be a great way to save money on your kitchen remodel. With a little time and effort, you can create beautiful, custom cabinet doors that will add style and character to your kitchen.
