How to Change Kitchen Cabinet Doors Glass: Step-by-Step Guide

Replacing the glass in your kitchen cabinet doors is a simple and affordable way to update the look of your kitchen. You can choose from a variety of glass styles, including clear, frosted, textured, or stained, to create a look that matches your personal taste and kitchen décor.

Materials You'll Need

  • New cabinet door glass
  • Glazing tape
  • Non-hardening glazing compound
  • Putty knife
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety glasses

Instructions

Step 1: Remove the Old Glass

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from splinters. Use a putty knife to carefully remove the old glazing compound around the edges of the glass. Be careful not to damage the wood frame.

Once the glazing compound is removed, you can gently pry the old glass out of the frame. If the glass is stuck, use a thin metal spatula to loosen it.

Step 2: Clean the Frame

Once the old glass is removed, clean the frame thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any remaining glazing compound or debris.

Step 3: Apply Glazing Tape

Apply a continuous strip of glazing tape around the inside edge of the frame. This tape will help to seal the glass and prevent moisture from seeping in.

Step 4: Cut and Insert the New Glass

Measure the opening in the frame and cut the new glass to size using a glass cutter. If you are not comfortable cutting glass, you can take the measurements to a hardware store and have them cut the glass for you.

Once the glass is cut, insert it into the frame on top of the glazing tape. Make sure that the glass is centered and flush with the edges of the frame.

Step 5: Apply Glazing Compound

Apply a bead of non-hardening glazing compound around the edges of the glass. Use a putty knife to smooth the compound and create a seal between the glass and the frame.

Step 6: Allow the Compound to Cure

Allow the glazing compound to cure for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer. Once the compound is cured, the cabinet door glass will be securely in place.

Tips

  • Be sure to wear safety glasses when working with glass.
  • If you are not comfortable cutting glass, you can take the measurements to a hardware store and have them cut the glass for you.
  • Use non-hardening glazing compound so that you can easily remove the glass in the future if necessary.
  • Allow the glazing compound to cure completely before using the cabinet door.
