How to Distress Chalk Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Are you looking for a way to add character and charm to your kitchen cabinets? Distressing chalk paint is a great way to achieve this look. It's a relatively simple and affordable project that can be completed in a weekend.

Materials you'll need:

  • Chalk paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Steel wool
  • Wax
  • Lint-free cloths

Instructions:

  1. Clean your cabinets. Remove all of the hardware and clean the cabinets with a degreaser. This will help the paint to adhere better.
  2. Apply a coat of chalk paint. Use a brush or roller to apply a thin, even coat of chalk paint to the cabinets. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  3. Sand the cabinets. Once the paint is dry, use sandpaper to lightly sand the edges and corners of the cabinets. This will create a distressed look.
  4. Apply a second coat of chalk paint. Apply a second coat of chalk paint to the cabinets, this time using a slightly heavier hand. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  5. Distress the cabinets. Use steel wool to distress the cabinets. Rub the steel wool over the edges and corners of the cabinets to create a more worn look.
  6. Apply wax. Apply a coat of wax to the cabinets to protect the finish. Use a lint-free cloth to apply the wax, and buff it into the cabinets until they shine.
  7. Reattach the hardware. Once the wax is dry, reattach the hardware to the cabinets.

Tips:

  • Use a light touch when sanding the cabinets. You don't want to remove too much paint.
  • If you want a more distressed look, you can use a coarser sandpaper.
  • Be sure to apply the wax evenly to protect the finish.
  • You can also use other techniques to distress the cabinets, such as using a hammer or a chisel.

Distressing chalk paint kitchen cabinets is a great way to add character and charm to your kitchen. It's a relatively simple and affordable project that can be completed in a weekend. With a little bit of effort, you can create a beautiful new look for your kitchen.
