How to Fix a Corner Kitchen Cabinet
Corner kitchen cabinets can be a challenge to install and repair. But with the right tools and know-how, you can get the job done like a pro.
Tools and Materials
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Clamps
- Wood glue
- Replacement parts (if necessary)
Step 1: Remove the Door and Shelves
Start by removing the cabinet door and any shelves. This will give you access to the inside of the cabinet and make it easier to work.
Step 2: Check the Frame
Once the door and shelves are removed, check the cabinet frame for any damage. Look for loose screws, split wood, or broken hinges. If you find any damage, repair it before proceeding.
Step 3: Realign the Cabinet
If the cabinet is not square, you will need to realign it. Start by measuring the distance between the front and back corners of the cabinet. If the measurement is not the same on both sides, adjust the screws on the hinges until the cabinet is square.
Step 4: Install the Corner Molding
If your cabinet has a corner molding, it will need to be installed before you can replace the door and shelves. Cut the molding to size and miter the ends at a 45-degree angle. Apply wood glue to the ends of the molding and press it into place. Secure the molding with clamps while the glue dries.
Step 5: Replace the Door and Shelves
Once the corner molding is installed, you can replace the door and shelves. Start by attaching the shelves to the cabinet. Then, hang the door on the hinges. Make sure the door is aligned properly and that it opens and closes smoothly.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Once the door and shelves are installed, you can add the finishing touches. This may include caulking around the edges of the cabinet, painting the cabinet, or installing new hardware.
Tips
- Use a level to make sure the cabinet is square before you install the corner molding.
- Apply wood glue to all joints before assembling the cabinet.
- Clamp the cabinet together while the glue dries to ensure a strong bond.
- If you are not comfortable repairing the cabinet yourself, contact a professional cabinet maker or handyman.
