How to Hang Kitchen Units on Plasterboard

Hanging kitchen units on plasterboard requires careful planning and precision. Here are the essential steps to ensure a strong and level installation:

1. Preparation

Before hanging the units, remove all doors and drawers to reduce weight. Clean the plasterboard surface thoroughly to remove any dust or debris. Mark the desired height of the base units on the wall, using a spirit level to ensure accuracy.

2. Installing Supporting Battens

Plasterboard may not be strong enough to support the weight of kitchen units alone. Install vertical supporting battens along the marked height lines. Use battens at least 50mm wide and 25mm thick, spaced approximately 400mm apart. Secure the battens to the wall studs with 50mm screws.

3. Marking Unit Positions

Transfer the unit positions onto the battens. Use a pencil and spirit level to ensure all units are aligned and level. Mark the screw hole positions on the battens.

4. Drilling Pilot Holes

Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws you will be using into the battens at the marked screw hole positions. This will prevent the plasterboard from splitting when the screws are driven in.

5. Installing the Base Units

Place the base units onto the battens, aligning them with the marked positions. Drive in the screws through the pilot holes into the battens. Check the units are level and make any necessary adjustments.

6. Securing the Units to Plasterboard

In addition to the battens, it is recommended to secure the units directly to the plasterboard. Use special plasterboard screws that have tapered heads to spread the load. Drive the screws into the plasterboard at an angle, ensuring they are countersunk below the surface.

7. Installing Wall Units

Wall units are typically hung on a rails system. Install the hanging rails on the wall, ensuring they are level and securely attached to the studs. Hang the wall units onto the rails, adjusting the height and leveling as needed.

8. Connecting the Units

Once all the units are hung, connect them together using unit connectors. These connectors ensure the units are aligned and stable. Use screws or cam fittings to secure the connectors.

9. Final Checks

Reinstall the doors and drawers, then step back and check the overall installation. Ensure all units are level, aligned, and securely attached. Make any necessary adjustments before using the kitchen.
