How To Install Kitchen Cabinet Base Molding

Installing kitchen cabinet base molding adds an elegant touch to your kitchen décor and provides a finished look to your cabinetry. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you install base molding like a pro:

Materials you'll need:

  • Cabinet base molding
  • Miter saw or miter box
  • Caulk gun and caulk
  • Brad nailer or hammer and finishing nails
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Molding

Measure the length of the cabinet base and transfer it to the molding. Use a miter saw or a miter box to cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of the molding. This will create a mitered joint when the ends meet.

Step 2: Dry Fit the Molding

Place the molding in position along the base of the cabinet and check for a snug fit. Ensure the mitered joints line up correctly and that the molding extends slightly beyond the edge of the cabinet.

Step 3: Apply Caulk

Run a bead of caulk along the back of the molding where it will make contact with the cabinet and the floor. This will help seal any gaps and prevent water damage.

Step 4: Secure the Molding

Use a brad nailer or hammer and finishing nails to secure the molding in place. Start by nailing the molding into the cabinet base, driving the nails in at an angle. Then, nail the molding into the floor, countersinking the nails slightly below the surface.

Step 5: Fill Nail Holes and Caulk Joints

Fill any visible nail holes with wood filler or caulk. Use a damp cloth to smooth out the filler or caulk and remove any excess.

Step 6: Repeat for Remaining Sides

Measure, cut, and install the molding on the remaining sides of the cabinet base, following the same steps as outlined above.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp blade on your miter saw to ensure clean cuts.
  • Practice cutting the molding on scrap pieces before making the final cuts.
  • Don't overtighten the brad nails, as this can split the molding.
  • Allow the caulk to dry completely before using the kitchen.

By following these steps, you can easily install kitchen cabinet base molding and enhance the appeal of your kitchen.
