Installing Kitchen Cabinets on Plaster Walls: A Comprehensive Guide
Installing kitchen cabinets on plaster walls requires careful preparation and specific techniques to ensure a secure and long-lasting installation. Here's a detailed guide to help you navigate the process efficiently and professionally:
1. Prepare the Walls
Begin by removing any existing cabinets or hardware. Clean the plaster walls thoroughly and check for any imperfections. Fill any holes or cracks with plaster patch or joint compound and allow it to dry. Use a sanding block to smooth the repaired areas.
2. Plan the Cabinet Layout
Determine the desired layout of your kitchen cabinets, considering their size, function, and placement. Mark the wall studs to identify the support points for the cabinets. If necessary, install additional studs to provide adequate support.
3. Install Blocking
For increased stability, install 1x4 or 1x6 blocking between the studs to support the weight of the cabinets. These blocks should be placed at the top, bottom, and center of the cabinets.
4. Install Wall Cleats
Wall cleats provide additional support and stability for the cabinets. Cut 1x3 or 1x4 cleats to the desired length and attach them to the wall studs using 2-inch screws. The cleat should be positioned slightly higher than the bottom of the cabinet.
5. Mount the Cabinets
Carefully lift the first cabinet into place and align it with the wall cleats. Secure the cabinet to the wall using 2-inch screws through the back of the cabinet into the cleats. Repeat the process for each cabinet, ensuring they are level and securely attached.
6. Secure to the Blocking
Once all the cabinets are mounted, screw them into the blocking installed earlier. This will provide additional support and prevent the cabinets from sagging or shifting.
7. Install Crown Molding (Optional)
If desired, install crown molding to conceal the gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. Cut the molding to length and secure it in place using small finishing nails or adhesive.
Tips:
* Use a level to ensure that the cabinets are installed evenly. * Countersink the screws slightly below the surface of the cabinet to prevent snagging. * Fill any nail holes with wood filler or caulk for a clean finish. * Consider using construction adhesive along with screws for added strength. * Allow the adhesive to cure completely before applying any pressure or heavy items to the cabinets. How To Hang Kitchen Cabinets On Plaster Walls Shiny Clean
