How to Install New Hardware on Kitchen Cabinets

Updating your kitchen cabinets with new hardware is a simple and cost-effective way to refresh the look of your kitchen. With just a few basic tools, you can easily install new hardware yourself in a matter of hours.

Here are the steps involved in installing new hardware on kitchen cabinets:

1. Gather your materials and tools

Before you start, you will need to gather the following materials and tools:

  • New cabinet hardware
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Drill (optional)
  • Drill bit (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

2. Remove the old hardware

Start by removing the old hardware from the cabinets. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew the screws that hold the hardware in place. If the screws are stripped or difficult to remove, you can use a drill with a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw head to drill out the screws.

3. Measure and mark the holes for the new hardware

Once the old hardware is removed, measure and mark the holes for the new hardware. The distance between the holes will vary depending on the size and style of the hardware you have chosen. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the location of the holes on the cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

4. Drill pilot holes (optional)

If you are installing new hardware on solid wood cabinets, you may want to drill pilot holes before inserting the screws. This will help to prevent the wood from splitting. To drill pilot holes, use a drill with a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws you will be using. Drill the holes to a depth of about 1/2 inch.

5. Install the new hardware

Once the pilot holes are drilled (if necessary), insert the screws into the new hardware and screw the hardware into the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Be sure to tighten the screws securely, but do not overtighten them.

6. Enjoy your updated kitchen!

Once the new hardware is installed, step back and admire your updated kitchen. New hardware can make a big difference in the look and feel of your kitchen, and it is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to update your space.

Here are some additional tips for installing new hardware on kitchen cabinets:

  • If you are not sure about the size or style of hardware that you want, consult with a kitchen designer or hardware store employee.
  • When measuring for the holes, be sure to measure from the center of the hole to the center of the hole.
  • If the new hardware is a different size than the old hardware, you may need to fill in the old holes with wood filler before installing the new hardware.
  • Once the new hardware is installed, clean the cabinets with a damp cloth to remove any fingerprints or smudges.
