How to Install Strip Lighting Under Kitchen Cabinets
Under-cabinet strip lighting is a popular way to add extra illumination to your kitchen and create a more ambient atmosphere. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours, even if you're not an experienced DIYer.
Materials You'll Need:
- Strip lighting
- Power supply
- Wire connectors
- Mounting clips or screws
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Drill (if necessary)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Plan the PlacementFirst, decide where you want the strip lighting to go. Measure the length of the cabinets where you want to install it, and cut the strip to the appropriate length. If necessary, you can connect multiple strips together to span longer distances.
2. Install the Mounting ClipsNext, install the mounting clips or screws along the underside of the cabinets. Space them evenly, about every 12-18 inches. If you're using clips, simply snap them into place. If you're using screws, pre-drill small pilot holes before inserting them.
3. Connect the Strip LightingNow, connect the strip lighting to the power supply. Start by soldering or using wire connectors to attach the positive and negative wires from the strip lighting to the corresponding wires from the power supply. If you're using a dimmer, connect it between the power supply and the strip lighting.
4. Mount the Strip LightingOnce the strip lighting is connected, it's time to mount it to the cabinets. If you're using mounting clips, simply push the strip into the clips. If you're using screws, insert the screws through the mounting holes in the strip.
5. Conceal the WiresTo give your installation a clean look, you can conceal the wires by using wire covers or a wire raceway. This will hide the wires and keep them out of sight.
6. Power On and EnjoyFinally, plug in the power supply and turn on the strip lighting. Adjust the dimmer (if you have one) to the desired brightness level. Enjoy your new kitchen lighting!
Additional Tips:
- Use high-quality strip lighting that is rated for damp locations.
- Make sure the power supply is powerful enough to handle the wattage of the strip lighting.
- If you're not sure how to solder, you can use wire connectors instead.
- Test the strip lighting before mounting it permanently to make sure it's working properly.
- Be careful not to overload the power supply by connecting too many strip lights to it.
