How to Make Sliding Doors for Kitchen Cabinets

Sliding cabinet doors offer a sleek and space-saving alternative to traditional hinged doors. They're great for maximizing storage in narrow spaces or maximizing the flow of traffic in a busy kitchen.

Materials Needed

* 1/2-inch plywood or MDF * 1/4-inch hardboard * Wood glue * 1 1/4-inch wood screws * Door track * Door rollers * Measuring tape * Circular saw * Jigsaw * Drill * Countersink bit

Step 1: Cut the Door Panels

* Measure and cut two pieces of plywood or MDF to the desired door size. * Cut two pieces of hardboard to the same size as the plywood panels.

Step 2: Assemble the Doors

* Apply wood glue to the edges of one plywood panel. * Place one hardboard panel on top of the plywood panel and press firmly. * Repeat with the other plywood panel and hardboard panel. * Secure the panels together with wood screws.

Step 3: Install the Door Track

* Measure and mark the location of the door track on the cabinet frame. * Secure the door track to the cabinet frame with screws.

Step 4: Install the Door Rollers

* Attach the door rollers to the top of the door panels. * Make sure the rollers are evenly spaced.

Step 5: Insert the Doors into the Track

* Lift the doors into the door track. * Adjust the rollers until the doors slide smoothly.

Step 6: Secure the Doors

* Use a countersink bit to drill two small holes in the top of each door. * Insert 1 1/4-inch wood screws into the holes to secure the doors to the track.

Step 7: Finish the Doors

* Sand the doors to remove any rough edges. * Apply paint or stain to the doors as desired.

Tips

* Use a router or a biscuit joiner to create a tongue-and-groove joint between the plywood panels and hardboard panels for extra strength. * Add decorative trim to the doors to match the style of your kitchen. * Consider installing a soft-close mechanism to the doors to prevent them from slamming shut. * Sliding doors are a great way to add style and functionality to your kitchen. With a little planning and effort, you can make your own sliding doors in no time.
