How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Distressed Grey

Distressed grey kitchen cabinets are a popular choice for creating a vintage or farmhouse-inspired look. The process of distressing the cabinets is relatively simple and can be done in a few steps. Here's a guide to help you paint kitchen cabinets distressed grey:

Materials:

  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Degreaser
  • Primer
  • Grey paint
  • Black paint
  • Wax or polyurethane
  • Paintbrush or roller
  • Tack cloth

Steps:

1. Clean and sand the cabinets:

Start by cleaning the cabinets with a degreaser to remove any dirt, grease, or grime. Once the cabinets are clean, sand them lightly with 120-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Wipe away any dust with a tack cloth.

2. Prime the cabinets:

Apply a coat of primer to the cabinets. This will help the paint to adhere better and will also help to prevent the wood from absorbing too much paint. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding.

3. Paint the cabinets grey:

Using a paintbrush or roller, apply two coats of grey paint to the cabinets. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. If you want a more distressed look, you can apply multiple coats of paint and sand lightly between coats.

4. Distress the cabinets:

Once the grey paint is dry, you can begin distressing the cabinets. To do this, use a sanding block wrapped in 220-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the edges and corners of the cabinets. You can also use a wire brush to create a more distressed look.

5. Paint the cabinets black:

Once you are happy with the distressed look, apply a coat of black paint to the cabinets. Allow the black paint to dry completely.

6. Sand the cabinets:

Once the black paint is dry, sand the cabinets lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. This will help to blend the grey and black paint and create a more distressed look.

7. Wax or polyurethane the cabinets:

To protect the cabinets and make them more durable, apply a coat of wax or polyurethane. Allow the wax or polyurethane to dry completely before using the cabinets.

Tips:

  • If you are unsure about the amount of distressing you want, start by sanding lightly and gradually increase the amount of sanding until you achieve the desired look.
  • You can use different colors of paint to create different looks. For example, you could use a light grey paint for a more subtle distressed look or a dark grey paint for a more dramatic look.
  • If you are painting over existing cabinets, be sure to clean and prime the cabinets before painting.
By following these steps, you can easily create a beautiful distressed grey kitchen cabinet.
