How to Install Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Installing kitchen cabinet doors requires some attention to detail, but the process is relatively straightforward with the right tools and a little patience. This guide will take you through the essential steps of hanging cabinet doors, from measuring and marking the hinges to aligning and securing them.

Materials and Tools

  • Cabinet doors
  • Hinges (35mm concealed hinges are common)
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Drill bit (35mm Forstner bit for concealed hinges)
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marking tool

Step 1: Measure and Mark for the Hinges

Begin by measuring the height between the top of the cabinet and the top of the desired hinge position. Divide this height by two to find the center point for the hinge.

Mark the center point on both the cabinet face frame and the cabinet door. Then, measure 22mm (the standard hinge depth) from the edge of the door and frame and mark the hinge cup locations.

Step 2: Drill the Hinge Cups

Use a 35mm Forstner bit to drill the hinge cups in the cabinet face frame and the door. Make sure the drill is perpendicular to the surface and that the depth is sufficient to accommodate the hinge.

Step 3: Install the Hinge Plates

Insert the hinge plates into the drilled cups and secure them with screws. Ensure that the hinge arms are aligned correctly.

Step 4: Align and Secure the Doors

Place the door on the hinges and adjust it until it is aligned correctly. Use a level to ensure the door is straight and use clamps to hold it in place.

Drive screws into the hinge plates to secure the door to the cabinet.

Step 5: Adjust the Hinges

Once the doors are secured, you may need to make minor adjustments to ensure they open and close smoothly. Use the screws on the hinge to adjust the door's position, alignment, and clearance.

Tips

  • Use a template or jig for precise hinge drilling.
  • Pre-drill pilot holes for the screws to prevent splitting the wood.
  • Use a magnetic screwdriver to make it easier to hold the screws.
  • If the door is rubbing against the frame, sand or plane the door edge.
  • Add soft-close hinges to prevent slamming and extend the life of your doors.

Conclusion

By following these steps and using the recommended tools and materials, you can successfully install kitchen cabinet doors, giving your kitchen a refreshed and updated look.
