How To Refinish Wood Kitchen Cabinets

Refinishing wood kitchen cabinets is a great way to update the look of your kitchen without having to replace them. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend, and it can save you a lot of money. Here are the steps on how to refinish wood kitchen cabinets:

1. Clean the cabinets

The first step is to clean the cabinets thoroughly. This will remove any dirt, grease, or grime that could interfere with the refinishing process. Use a mild soap and water solution and a soft cloth to clean the cabinets. Be sure to rinse the cabinets well and then dry them completely.

2. Remove the doors and hardware

Once the cabinets are clean, you need to remove the doors and hardware. This will make it easier to refinish the cabinets. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the doors in place. Then, carefully lift the doors off the cabinets. Set the doors aside in a safe place.

3. Sand the cabinets

The next step is to sand the cabinets. This will remove the old finish and smooth the surface of the cabinets. Use a medium-grit sandpaper and sand with the grain of the wood. Be sure to sand all of the surfaces of the cabinets, including the inside of the doors.

4. Clean the cabinets again

Once the cabinets are sanded, you need to clean them again. This will remove any dust that was created during the sanding process. Use a tack cloth to wipe down the cabinets. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies.

5. Apply a primer

The next step is to apply a primer to the cabinets. This will help the new finish to adhere to the cabinets. Use a high-quality primer and apply it with a brush or roller. Be sure to apply the primer evenly and allow it to dry completely.

6. Apply the new finish

Once the primer is dry, you can apply the new finish to the cabinets. You can use a paint, stain, or clear finish. If you are using a paint, be sure to apply it in thin coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat. If you are using a stain, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you are using a clear finish, be sure to apply it evenly and allow it to dry completely.

7. Reinstall the doors and hardware

Once the new finish is dry, you can reinstall the doors and hardware. Use a screwdriver to attach the screws that hold the doors in place. Then, carefully lift the doors onto the cabinets. Finally, reattach the hardware to the doors.

8. Enjoy your new cabinets!

Once the cabinets are refinished, you can enjoy your new kitchen! The cabinets will look great and they will be more durable than before.
