How to Rehang Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Rehanging kitchen cabinet doors is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. By following these steps, you can ensure that your cabinet doors are hung securely and evenly.

Tools and materials you will need:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 1: Remove the old cabinet doors

Start by removing the old cabinet doors. To do this, simply locate the screws that are holding the doors in place and remove them using a Phillips head screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, carefully lift the doors off of the hinges.

Step 2: Clean the cabinet door frames

Once the old cabinet doors are removed, take some time to clean the cabinet door frames. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or debris that may have accumulated over time. This will help to ensure that the new cabinet doors will fit properly.

Step 3: Mark the hinge locations

Next, you need to mark the locations for the new hinges. To do this, place the new cabinet door on the cabinet frame and align it so that it is level and evenly spaced from the other doors. Once the door is in place, use a pencil to mark the locations of the hinge holes.

Step 4: Drill pilot holes for the hinges

Once the hinge locations are marked, drill pilot holes for the screws. This will help to prevent the wood from splitting when you screw in the hinges. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws that you will be using.

Step 5: Install the hinges

Now you can install the hinges. Place the hinges over the pilot holes and secure them in place using screws. Make sure that the screws are tightened securely, but do not overtighten them.

Step 6: Rehang the cabinet doors

Once the hinges are installed, you can rehang the cabinet doors. To do this, simply lift the doors onto the hinges and align them so that they are level and evenly spaced. Once the doors are in place, tighten the screws that are holding the hinges in place.

Step 7: Fill in any gaps

If there are any gaps between the cabinet doors and the frames, you can fill them in with wood filler. To do this, simply apply a small amount of wood filler to the gap and smooth it out with a putty knife. Once the wood filler is dry, you can sand it smooth and paint or stain it to match the cabinet doors.

Step 8: Enjoy your newly rehung cabinet doors

Your cabinet doors are now rehung and ready to use. Enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done!
