How to Remove Kickboards in the Kitchen

Kickboards are the panels that cover the gap between the bottom of the kitchen cabinets and the floor. They serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose by hiding unsightly gaps, protecting the cabinets from moisture and dirt, and adding a finished look to the kitchen. However, when it comes time to clean, repair, or replace the cabinets, kickboards can be an obstacle. Removing them can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little know-how, it can be done safely and efficiently.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer (optional)
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Remove any attached appliances

If there are any appliances attached to the kickboards, such as dishwashers or ovens, they will need to be removed first. Refer to the appliance's user manual for specific instructions.

Step 2: Locate the screws

Most kickboards are attached to the cabinets with screws. Locate the screws along the top edge of the kickboard, usually hidden behind a thin strip of trim. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws.

Step 3: Pry the kickboard loose

Once the screws are removed, use a pry bar to gently pry the kickboard loose from the cabinets. Start from one end and work your way along the length of the kickboard, taking care not to damage the cabinets or the kickboard itself.

Step 4: Remove the kickboard

Once the kickboard is loose, carefully pull it away from the cabinets. If it is still stuck in some places, gently tap it with a hammer to loosen it. Be careful not to hit the kickboard too hard, as it can crack or break.

Step 5: Clean the area

Once the kickboard is removed, take the opportunity to clean the area behind it. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or debris that may have accumulated.

Step 6: Reinstall the kickboard (optional)

If you are replacing the kickboard, simply reverse the steps to reinstall it. Make sure to align the kickboard properly with the cabinets and tighten the screws securely.

Tips:

  • Wear safety glasses when removing kickboards to protect your eyes from flying debris.
  • If the kickboards are particularly stubborn, you can try using a heat gun to soften the adhesive.
  • Be patient and take your time. Removing kickboards can be a delicate process, so it's important to avoid rushing.
