How to Spray Paint Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Are your kitchen cabinets looking tired and outdated? A fresh coat of paint can give them a new lease on life, and it's a relatively easy project that you can do yourself. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to spray paint kitchen cabinet doors:

Materials You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • TSP cleaner or denatured alcohol
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Primer
  • Spray paint
  • Clear coat (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Cabinet Doors

Remove all hardware from the cabinet doors. Then, clean the doors thoroughly with TSP cleaner or denatured alcohol to remove any grease or dirt. Allow the doors to dry completely.

Step 2: Sand the Doors

Lightly sand the doors with 120-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Then, sand again with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any scratches. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth.

Step 3: Apply Primer

Shake the primer can well and apply a thin, even coat to the doors. Allow the primer to dry completely.

Step 4: Spray Paint the Doors

Shake the spray paint can well and hold it about 6-8 inches away from the doors. Apply a thin, even coat of paint, using overlapping strokes. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat. You may need to apply 3-4 coats of paint to achieve the desired coverage.

Step 5: Apply Clear Coat (Optional)

If you want to protect the paint finish, you can apply a clear coat. Shake the clear coat can well and apply a thin, even coat to the doors. Allow the clear coat to dry completely.

Step 6: Reattach Hardware

Once the paint is completely dry, reattach the hardware to the cabinet doors. Your newly painted kitchen cabinet doors are now ready to enjoy!

Tips

  • Use a spray gun for a smoother, more even finish.
  • Practice spraying on a piece of scrap wood before starting on the cabinet doors.
  • Apply thin, even coats of paint and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  • If you make a mistake, don't panic! Simply sand off the paint and start again.
