Essential Aspects of Putting Contact Paper On Kitchen Cabinets

Contact paper is a versatile self-adhesive material that can be used to update and refresh the look of your kitchen cabinets without the need for a major renovation. However, to ensure a smooth and successful application, there are several essential aspects to consider.

Preparation and Cleaning

Before applying contact paper, it is crucial to thoroughly clean and prepare the cabinet surfaces. Remove all hardware, dust, and grease, as any imperfections or debris can affect the adhesion of the paper. Use a degreaser or rubbing alcohol for optimal cleaning.

Measurements and Cutting

Measure the cabinet doors and drawers accurately, allowing for a 1-inch overlap on all sides. Cut the contact paper to the measured dimensions using a sharp craft knife or scissors. It is recommended to use a straight edge or measuring tape to ensure clean and precise cuts.

Application

Starting from one corner, carefully peel back a small section of the contact paper backing. Align the paper with the edge of the cabinet and press down firmly. Use a smoothing tool or credit card to remove any air bubbles and ensure a smooth finish. Continue applying the contact paper, overlapping the edges slightly, until the entire surface is covered.

Trimming and Finishing Touches

Once the contact paper is applied, use a sharp utility knife to trim off any excess around the edges. Reinstall the cabinet hardware, ensuring that it is securely fastened.

Maintenance and Care

To maintain the beauty and durability of the contact paper, regular cleaning is essential. Wipe down the surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh cleaners or abrasive materials. Avoid exposing the contact paper to direct sunlight or extreme heat, as these can cause discoloration or peeling.
