Under Kitchen Cabinet Lighting Wiring

Under-cabinet lighting can dramatically improve the functionality and ambiance of your kitchen. It provides task lighting for food preparation and cleanup, while also creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Wiring under-cabinet lighting is a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a few hours with basic tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need

  • Under-cabinet light fixtures
  • Electrical wire (14-gauge or 16-gauge)
  • Junction box
  • Wire connectors
  • Electrical tape
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers

Step 1: Plan the Layout

Before you start wiring, it's important to plan the layout of your under-cabinet lighting. Determine where you want the lights to be placed and how they will be connected to the power source. You may need to drill holes in the cabinets to accommodate the wires.

Step 2: Install the Junction Box

The junction box will house the electrical connections for the lights. Mount the junction box to the ceiling or wall in a location that is accessible for wiring. Connect the power source to the junction box using electrical wire.

Step 3: Wire the Lights

Strip the ends of the electrical wire that will connect the lights to the junction box. Connect the black wire from the power source to the black wire on the light fixture, and the white wire from the power source to the white wire on the light fixture. Use wire connectors to secure the connections.

Step 4: Mount the Lights

Mount the under-cabinet lights to the cabinets using screws or clips. Make sure the lights are securely fastened and that the wires are not exposed.

Step 5: Connect the Lights

Connect the wires from the lights to the wires in the junction box. Use wire connectors to secure the connections. Make sure the connections are tight and insulated with electrical tape.

Step 6: Test the Lights

Turn on the power and test the lights to make sure they are working properly. If any of the lights are not working, check the connections and wiring to identify the problem.
