How To Build Simple Kitchen Base Cabinets

Base cabinets are one of the most important parts of any kitchen. They provide storage space for pots, pans, dishes, and other kitchen essentials. They also help to define the look and feel of your kitchen. In this article, we will show you how to build simple kitchen base cabinets that are both stylish and functional.

Step 1: Gather your materials

  • 1/2-inch MDF

  • Wood glue

  • 1 1/4-inch brad nails
  • *
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • *
  • Drawer slides

  • Cabinet hardware
  • Step 2: Cut the plywood

  • Cut two pieces of plywood for the sides of the cabinet. The pieces should be 30 inches tall by 24 inches wide.

  • Cut one piece of plywood for the back of the cabinet. The piece should be 29 inches tall by 23 inches wide.
  • *
  • Cut one piece of plywood for the bottom of the cabinet. The piece should be 23 inches wide by 18 inches deep.
  • Step 3: Assemble the box

  • Apply wood glue to the edges of the plywood pieces. Assemble the sides and back of the cabinet by nailing them together with 1 1/4-inch brad nails.

  • Attach the bottom of the cabinet to the sides and back by screwing it in place with 2-inch wood screws.
  • Step 4: Build the doors

  • Cut two pieces of 1x4 pine boards for the rails of the doors. The rails should be 24 inches long.

  • Cut two pieces of 1x4 pine boards for the stiles of the doors. The stiles should be 30 inches long.

  • Assemble the doors by nailing the rails and stiles together with 1 1/4-inch brad nails.

  • Attach the doors to the cabinet by hanging them on hinges.
  • Step 5: Build the drawers

  • Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch MDF for the sides of the drawers. The pieces should be 22 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

  • Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch MDF for the front and back of the drawers. The pieces should be 22 inches wide by 14 inches tall.

  • Cut one piece of 1/2-inch MDF for the bottom of the drawers. The piece should be 22 inches wide by 13 inches deep.

  • Assemble the drawers by gluing and nailing the sides, front, back, and bottom together.

  • Attach the drawer slides to the drawers and the cabinet.
  • Step 6: Install the hardware

  • Install the cabinet hardware, such as knobs or pulls.
  • Step 7: Finish the cabinet

  • Sand the cabinet to smooth out any rough edges.

  • Apply a primer to the cabinet.
